As we all know that you can customize several things while you're on Messaging app settings page, such as enable or disable notifications, changing message tone, set your phone to vibrate whenever it receive a new message, etc.

Here you can also setting to show the preview of the new incoming message in the notifications bar. This of course will useful if you want to know who's the sender and the quick glance of the message without having to go to Messaging app. But, the preview will only show if the screen is unlocked.

How to turn on or off new incoming text message preview?
Kindly follow the steps listed below if you want to show or not the preview of the new message in the notifications bar:
  1. Go to Apps through Home screen.
  2. Tap Messaging.
  3. Tap the Menu key.
  4. On pop up menu select Settings.
  5. Scroll to Notification settings section.
  6. If required, tap Notifications to enable this option.
  7. Depending on your current settings, tap Preview message to enable or disable this option. When the checkbox next to this option is ticked means the option is enabled.
  8. Tap Home button to return to the standby mode.
  9. Finish. Now everytime you receive the new message, you will see the preview of the message on the notifications bar.

By knowing on how to enable or disable this option, now you can set it according to your needs. When you want the preview of the new message show up in the notification bar, then turn this option on. While if not you can turn this option off. So, do you have this option enable on your phone or not?

    1. Hi Kent Charles Monteza,
      Thanks for coming.
I've walked through on some forums and I've found that the possible cause of this issue is an EFS corruption. Below are the steps to fix the problem revealed by a user in androidcentral forum (some user confirmed that this steps is works well):

      First, you need to root your phone and then install Terminal Emulator from Google Play Store. Open terminal emulator and type as ;

      su
      rm /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
      rm /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
      echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
      echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
      chown 1000.1000 /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
      chown 1000.1000 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
      chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
      chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
      reboot

  4. Hi.

On my samsung galaxy mini 3, I do not receive the little facebook message icon in my notification bar like my other friends do. I have enabled all the notification options so I'm not sure why I do not see the icon.

    Hope someone can help.

    1. Hi Felicia Holder,
      Thanks for coming.
If you have no problem with other notifications (e.g: email notifications, sms notifications, etc), then try to check the following things:
      1. (I assume that your phone is running with Android Jelly Bean) In the apps menu, tap and hold the Facebook app and then drag it to the "App info" icon located at the top of the screen. Make sure the checkbox in the left side of the "Show notifications" option is checked to allow your phone receiving notifications from the Facebook app.
      2. Open the Facebook app, tap the Menu key and then select "Settings". Make sure the checkbox next to the "Notifications" is checked to allow the Facebook app giving you notifications for the selected options under the notifications settings.

    1. Hi Rechelle,
      Thanks for coming.
The "Preview message" usually reside in the Notification settings section in the Messaging app settings. When you're in the Messaging app settings, make sure you have scrolled down the screen to see this option.
If you don't mind, can you please tell me your model number and the Android version?

  6. Hey there!
I was just wondering if there was a way to make it so that the screen does not light up when a text message comes through?
Recently I've been using an app which lets me text via computer, but of course, every time a text comes in, the screen will light up and this drains my battery.
    My phone is a galaxy s3 (:

    thanks!

    1. Hi Jessica Wong,
      Thanks for coming.
So, can I conclude that the app often sends you text messages and you don't want to be notified?
If that so, if the text messages come from the app have a phone number then you can add the number to the spam number so that each time you receive text messages from that number, the text messages will be blocked automatically and your screen will not light up.

    1. Hi Isuruhapuarachchi,
      Thanks for coming.
FYI, the first time I saw this feature when my S4 and S5 were running with Android 4.4.2 Kitkat.
So, if your S3 runs with Android Kitkat or Lollipop, try opening the settings menu in the stock Messaging app to find the "pop-up display" option. If you have this option and enable it, the incoming text messages will be displayed in a pop up window.
