  1. I have a Galaxy S4 and used the microphone...voice to text all the time. After my last update, the microphone disappeared. I have held down the button that everyone speaks of, and I see options. but microphone is not one of them. Is there any way to get that function back? I don't want a silly app I have to go to every time I want to use voice to text.

    1. Hi Linda Hodgkiss,
Thanks for coming and I'm so sorry for so late answer.
I've just found the solution for you(I hope it will work). Try to go to Settings> tap "My device" tab> scroll down to find "Language and input", then tap it> make sure to enable (by ticking the checkbox) in the left side of the "Google voice typing".
Now, you should be able to find Microphone icon when you long tap the key in the left side of the space bar .
      Hope it helps :)

    7. Hi Hailey Servaty,
      Thanks for coming.
Try performing reset app preferences in your phone (you can see the detail steps to do so in my reply for ZeeDot49928's comment). This will re-enable all disabled apps.
Once done, enable the Google Voice Typing option.

    1. Hi Andrea Elizabeth,
      Thanks for coming.
Have you tried to do the steps to enable Google voice typing as I've mentioned in my reply in the Linda's comment right above yours? Enabling Google voice typing option should be able to bring the Mic button back to your keyboard.

    3. Hi Michelle C.,
Thanks for coming and share your experience here.
I also noticed that an app had connection with another app. That's why disabling app sometimes can causes a problem for another app.

    4. Michelle C. answered the problem I was having specifically on my phone. I had disabled my google search. Who knew disabling Google Search is the same as saying 'I no longer want the microphone on my text keyboard screen'. LOL

      Thanks for coming.
Do you remember what have you done before that mic icon disappeared?
Other way, if you don't mind, you can try installing other keyboard apps and then try voice dictation with that keyboard app.

  9. Kudos to you T-moblow has nothing on you. T-moblow told me that it was an issue that was part of the new update. B.S. you made it easy to understand then having to wait an hour to get someone that should have been a little more honest and say "hey I don't know the answer" like every other time I have called for tech support and walked away empty handed.

    Kind regards

  10. Hi and Thank You for this service. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8" OS Lollipop. I can not figure out, even with the help of the manual, how to disable/enable the microphone. I don't want to talk to my tablet, except for Skyping, and I don't want my tablet eavesdropping on me. "Mute Mic" has been removed from the Google Play Store. Do you have any ideas that will work for an elderly non-techie?

  11. Thank you, Rehan. Your suggestion worked for me....with a few tweaks.

I have an LG-D415 with Android 5.0.2 installed. In case someone lands on this page with a similar configuration to mine, I'm going to retype the original guidelines making changes that are relevant to my phone/software.
I have to say that I have no idea what the long-term outcome will be, but from what I've experienced for the last 5 hours, the only issue is that you will have pop up boxes within apps so that you can set your preferences (which are wiped, I guess).

Again, this is primarily Rehan's suggestion and I'm only making adjustments for my phone. Most of the changes have to do with option placement, and terminology.

Try to reset the app preferences by using the following steps:
    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Tap "Apps". (If you have your settings in "Tab View", you will find "Apps" on the "General" tab.)
    3. You should now see the word "Downloaded" near the top of your screen
    4. Tap the Menu key/button for your phone and then select "Reset app preferences" and "Yes"(it'll re-enable all disabled apps and repopulate apps).
    5. Now go back to "Settings", select "Language & Input" you should now have the option to choose "Google voice typing". Check that box.
    5. Once done, restart the phone and then make sure you have selected "Samsung keyboard" as the default and enabled "Google voice typing" in the Language and input menu.
