Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Fix Recurring Old Download Notifications

One of the insider has leave her comment here to ask why the notification list in her phone repeatedly shows old downloads and can't be cleared. She realized that this issue occurs once she updated the phone to the Android 4.3. She said that she already done removed all the files in the Download folders through the My files app, but that's not works.

Indeed, this issue won't damage the phone, but not actual download notifications sometimes become so annoying. So, if you're also encountering the same problem once you perform update on your phone, then below are some possible methods that you can do to fix them:

Method #1: Clear all download histories in the Download app
The first method that you can do is by clearing all the download histories in the Download app by following the step below:
  1. Go to Apps through the Home screen.
  2. Tap Downloads.
  3. Clear all download histories in the Internet downloads and Other downloads tab by ticking all the box in the left side of the download history, and then tap the Trash can icon to delete all of them.

Method #2: Clear cache and data of the Download app
If the #1 is not works, then try to clear cache and data of the Download app through the Settings menu as listed in the step below:
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Application manager.
  3. Swipe to the All screen.
  4. Scroll down to find Downloads, then tap it.
  5. Tap Clear cache button.
  6. Tap Clear data button followed by tapping OK button.
  7. Tap Force stop button followed by tapping OK button.
  8. Restart the phone.

Method #3: Clear cache and data of the Download manager
If both of the steps above are not works, then try to follow the steps listed below:
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Application manager.
  3. Swipe to the All screen.
  4. Scroll down to find Download manager, then tap it.
  5. Tap Clear cache button.
  6. Tap Clear data button followed by tapping OK button.
  7. Tap Force stop button followed by tapping OK button.
  8. Restart the phone.

Well, these are the possible methods that you can do to fix recurring download notification after updating your phone to the Android 4.3. As usual, I didn't include the factory reset as one of methods to fix this problem due to the risks. However, if you know another methods that works to fix this problem, then I'll appreciate if you willing to share them through the comment below :)

    1. Hi Rosa Gamisans,
      Thanks for coming.
If you can't see them, then you should see the Downloads app displaying all the download histories in one screen. Just tap Clear list button to clear all of them. Or if you don't mind, you can also clear them through the Application manager as I've mentioned in the second and third method.
      Hope this helps :)

  5. hey! Thank you so much method number one worked great! If you don't work for Samsung or in my case T Mobile, you may want to get a contract with them and offer them some technical advice... The folks at T Mobile had no clue other than the factory restart. Thanks so much for your advice have a great day!

I always put the factory reset as the last resort because it's so painful to restore everything into the phone. And well, I'm so glad to know that this post was able to provide you a help to fix your problem :)

    1. Hi Kandy Stewart,
      Thanks for coming.
If you perform clear data then it will delete the current settings(revert the settings of app to the default settings), accounts(eg:login information, password), database(eg:game's level). But, it will not uninstall the app.

  7. Method #1 worked for me. Thank you very much. Also, your "fix" for the Flash Notification was very helpful. It was the topic of much amusement after having discovered the glitch while in the bathroom!

      Thanks for coming.
No, they won't. All of the steps mentioned above will delete your download histories only. But, if you worry, you can move/backup your contacts and pictures to your PC first before doing the steps.

  10. After a whole day of research, I was able to figure out that this is a browser specific issue. The Dolphin browser is causing the keep coming the download notifications. I tried to download an item with Dolphin browser. Once the download is starting, all the old downloads appear in the notification drawer. One more issue, you have observed or not that is once the current file is downloaded and you tap on it, it won't open. You need to browse through file manager and open/play it.

Finally, I backed up the data of Dolphin browser from the 'backup' option it has and then uninstalled and reinstalled both, Dolphin browser and Jetpack and it worked. Yaaay! no more download notifications.

This method applies to any other browser like UC browser etc. Try and let me know if it fixed the issue.

    1. Hi Athar Khan,
Thanks for coming and share your useful experience here. I really appreciate it :)
I personally always use the stock browser app and rarely use another third-party browser apps (including the Dolphin app).

However, I've tried downloading some files with Dolphin, but I had no problem with download notifications and I was able to open up the downloaded file from the notification panel.

  11. Hi Athar,
had the same problem...3 methods above did not work as I have dolphin & jetpack too.
In the menu options I saw downloads, I cleared the list in there and now my notifications are gone :-)
I have root and removed chrome, dolphin is faster on my phone and never hangs.
