How to use the Google voice typing feature to enter text?
Actually, you can use the Google voice typing feature in any app or screen where you can enter text. But, as the example, we'll try using this feature when composing a new text message in Messaging app. See the following steps to do so:
- Open Messaging app and then tap to create a new text message.
- If necessary, tap the Enter message field to view the keyboard.
- Long tap (FYI, other icons may appear instead of the icon depending on the last function that was used) until a pop up window appears and then select to start using the Google voice typing feature.
- When the Speak now screen with is displayed, speak your message clearly and distinctly into the microphone(It'd better if you break down your message into smaller segments). The text will be displayed in your message as you are speaking.
- Since this feature won't automatically insert punctuations, if you want to insert a punctuation then you have to manually speak the punctuation you want to use. For the example, if you'd like to type "Where are you?", then you'd need to speak the words "Where are you question mark".
The following are some handy voice dictation commands that work in Samsung Galaxy S5:
- comma= comma (,)
- full stop= full stop (.)
- question mark= question mark (?)
- exclamation point= exclamation point (!)
- enter or new line= break to a new line
- new paragraph= new paragraph
- Since this feature doesn't have a voice dictation command to delete a word, you have to tap Delete button if you'd like to delete a wrong word.
- If the mic icon turns gray, it means that this feature is timed out and you have to tap again to start entering text using your voice.
- If necessary, you can change the default language of the Google voice typing by using the following steps:
- Tap .
- Tap Add more languages.
- Clear the checkbox next to Automatic to allow you selecting other available languages.
- Now, select the required language you want to use.
- Press the Back key to return to the voice dictation screen.
- Tap quit from the Google voice typing screen and use the keyboard.
As a note, since the voice dictation commands in the Google voice typing feature are very limited therefore this feature is best used for conversational messages that don't need complex formatting or symbols, e.g.: email messages, text messages, quick notes, etc.
As recent as this morning, I was able to dictate in more than one language. However now I cannot. I realized that the "button" that says "English" in the keyboard does NOT have the inverted triangle in the lower right hand corner. how can I bring that back in order to toggle?
ReplyDeleteHi Buddy,
DeleteThanks for coming and I'm so sorry for late answer.
If you want to be able to dictate in more than one language then you have to add other languages as input language in the Samsung keyboard settings. If you don't know how to do so, kindly use the following steps:
1. Go to settings.
2. With the settings is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the System section and then tap "Language and input".
3. Tap the gear icon next to "Samsung keyboard".
4. Tap "+ Select input languages".
5. Select the required languages, e.g: English and Italiano.
6. Now, open the app where you want to use voice dictation and you should see the option to toggle between the selected languages.
Are there any more punctuations that I can use without typing? Or non-immediately apparent features? A master list of all the commands would be killer. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSpeech to text no longer switches commas to "," instead simply enters the word "comma". I've tried multiple ways of annunciating the word, and used different voices (low pitch, high pitch) and multiple accents to no avail. Whats going on?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Trevor. In previous OS versions, saying comma will get you a ,
ReplyDeleteNow it is very difficult to do. When it does it, I equate it to luck. Is there a fix and does samsung or Google know about this?
