Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable and Use Smart Rotation in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

Smart rotation is an advanced feature in Samsung Galaxy S5 that has similar function with the auto rotate feature. The difference is the auto rotate feature will automatically rotate the screen based on the phone orientation, while the smart rotation feature will automatically rotate the screen based on your face's orientation. The smart rotation feature works by utilizing the front facing camera to detect your face and then rotate the screen accordingly.

How to enable or disable the smart rotation feature?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Display .
  3. Tap Screen rotation. If the screen rotation is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. Depending on your current settings, tap Smart rotation to enable or disable it. When the checkbox next to the Smart rotation is checked means this feature is enabled.

How to use the smart rotation feature?
Before using this feature, make sure the following conditions are fulfilled so that the smart rotation feature will work best:
  • The device is held steady and upright.
  • The device is in a well-lit environment so that it'll get enough light to be used by the front camera to detect your face.
  • The screen is not in direct light so that the front camera can easily detect your face.
  • The front camera is not being used by other apps.

Assuming that you have enabled the smart rotation feature and all of the conditions have been fulfilled, then you can use the smart rotation feature to control the screen rotation. As the example, we'll use this feature while browsing a webpage in Internet app:
  1. Open a webpage in the Internet app.
  2. While holding the phone steady and upright, change both the phone and your face orientations at the same time (e.g: from vertical to horizontal position or vice versa). The smart rotation icon will be displayed on the status bar as a sign that the front camera is detecting your face. If the front camera manages to detect your face then the screen will rotate accordingly.

As a note, the smart rotation feature can't be used when you're in home screen and apps menu since both of them are designed to be displayed in portrait view only. All in all, the smart rotation feature is a great feature and will be able to provide you a better experience when using your phone (e.g: browsing webpages, using any app, etc) since this feature will make the screen orientation always be the same as your face's.

  1. Galaxy S5 stopped auto rotating after network update. Have tried apps, have tried factory reset, have tried taking out battery, etc. NOTHING WORKS! Find a fix, please!
