A couple weeks back, an insider asked me through her comment about why her phone still played notifications when receiving messages whereas she had turned on the Do not disturb mode and didn't set messages as exceptions. After some further investigation, it turned out that the stock Messaging app notification in her phone has been accidentally set as priority. Thus, if you're also experience this problem, you have to turn off priority settings for the stock Messaging app notification in your Samsung Galaxy S5 so that your phone will mute notifications(sound and vibration) when you receive messages when the Do not disturb is enabled and messages is not set as exceptions.

How to turn off priority settings for the stock Messaging app notification?
You can do so by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom, and then tap App notifications.
4. Scroll down to find Messages, and then tap it.
5. Slide the ON/OFF switch next to Priority to the left to turn this option off. The switch turns gray when it's disabled.
6. From now on, assuming that the Do not disturb mode is enabled and messages is not set as exceptions, your phone will mute notification(sound and vibration) when a new message arrives.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Fix No Notification Sound when New Messages Arrive in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

Your phone plays a sound(message tone) when receiving a new message to help you easily know that you have a new one. Thus, it could be a big problem if you don't get the sound when receiving messages since you may miss important ones. However, if you're facing no notification sound issue, these are some actions that can be taken to fix this issue:

#1: Make sure to not set "silent" as message tone
You can assign the required sound as message tone by by using the following steps:

1. Open the stock Messaging app.
2. Tap at the top right to open up the additional options.
3. Scroll down the options and then select Settings.
4. Scroll down the screen and then tap Notifications.
5. If Notifications is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on. The switch turns green when it's enabled.
6. Tap Notification sound.
7. Select the required sound (make sure to not choose "silent").
8. Tap OK button.
9. The selected sound has been set as message tone.

#2: Make sure to not set "silent" as the general notification sound
If you assign "Default notification sound" as message tone in the stock Messaging app settings or for a specific contact, it means that the general notification sound will be used as message tone. Thus, you have to make sure that silent is not set as the general notification sound by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll down to find Notification ringtone, and then tap it.
4. Select the required sound (make sure not to choose "silent").
5. Tap OK button.
6. The selected sound has been set as the general notification sound.

#3: Make sure your phone is not in vibration or silent mode
When your phone is in vibration or silent mode, the notification sound will be muted. Thus, you have to place your phone in sound mode to allow your phone plays a sound when receiving new messages by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Tap Sound mode and then select Sound.
4. Your phone has been placed in the Sound mode.

#4: Make sure the notifications volume is not muted
You can adjust the notifications volume by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. If needed, you can drag the volume adjustment bar under Notifications to the right to increase the notifications sound volume.

#5: Make sure the notifications of the Messaging app is not disabled or blocked
You can enable notifications of the stock Messaging app to allow your phone plays a sound when receiving new messages by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Applications section and then tap Application manager .
3. Swipe the screen from the right to the left to view the ALL tab. All installed apps will be displayed here.
4. Scroll down the screen to find Messages, and then tap it.
5. Check the box in the left side of the Show notifications option to enable it.
6. The notifications of the stock Messaging app has been enabled.

#6: If Do not disturb mode is enabled, make sure to set messages as exceptions
When Do not disturb mode is enabled, you have to set messages as exceptions to allow your phone plays a sound when receiving message by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
4. Tap Do not disturb. 
5. Tap Allow exceptions.
6. If Allow exceptions is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on. The switch turns green when it's enabled.
7. Check the box next to Messages to enable this option.
8. If needed, you can choose whose messages will make your phone plays a sound by tapping Calls and/or messages from and then select from the following options:
• All: select this option to allow notification sound for all incoming messages.
• Favourite contacts only: select this option to allow notification sound for incoming messages come from those who are listed in your favourite list.
• Contacts only: select this option to allow notification sound for incoming messages come from those who are listed in your contacts list.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Set Application Notifications as Priority in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

By default, notifications(sound and vibration) of all apps will be turned off when Do not disturb mode is enabled. But, if needed, you can set app notifications as priority to allow notifications of the app as exceptions, in other words, your phone will play a sound and/or vibrate when a notification of the app that you have set its notifications as priority arrives even when your phone is in Do not disturb mode.

How to set notifications of an app as priority?
As the example, we'll set Gmail app notifications as priority so that your phone will play a sound and/or vibrate when an account in your Gmail app receives a new email message even when Do not disturb mode is enabled. Use the following steps to do so:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
4. Tap App notifications.
5. Scroll down to find Gmail app, and then tap it.
6. Slide the ON/OFF switch next to Priority to the right to enable this option. The switch turns green when it's enabled.
7. Gmail app notifications has been set as priority.

As a note, in Apps notifications menu, all apps with notifications set as priority will be labelled with Priority under the app name.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Block Application Notifications in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

If needed, you can block notifications of an app when you don't want your phone displays the app notifications in lock screen, status bar and notifications panel. Block notifications of an app will also make your phone doesn't play a sound or vibrate when a notification of that app arrives. As the example, if you block Gmail app notifications, your phone won't display a notification, play a sound or vibrate when a new Gmail email message arrives.


How to block notifications of an app?
There are some methods that can be used to block or disable app notifications. But, as the example, we'll try blocking Gmail app notifications by using two different methods: from the app manager menu and from the app notifications menu(you can find this option if you have updated your Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop).

Method #1: From the app manager menu

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Applications section and then tap Application manager .
3. Swipe the screen from the right to the left to view the ALL tab. All installed apps in your phone will be displayed here.
4. Scroll down the screen to find Gmail app, and then tap it.
5. Clear the checkbox in the left side of the Show notifications option to disable this option.
6. A pop up window will appear to inform that you may miss important alerts and updates if you disable the app notifications. Tap OK button to continue.
7. The notifications of Gmail app has been blocked.

Method #2: From the app notifications menu

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
4. Tap App notifications.
5. Scroll down the screen to find Gmail, and then tap it.
6. Slide the ON/OFF switch next to Block to the right to enable this option. The switch turns green when it's enabled.
7. The notifications of Gmail app has been blocked.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Mute Notifications Except for Calls from Favourite Contacts During the Night in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

If you're like me, I really don't like to be disturbed with notifications when I'm sleeping at night except for calls from those who are listed in my favourite list. Fortunately, after updating my Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, I get a new feature named Do not disturb mode which will let me to set my phone to mute other notifications and only ring when I receive calls from my favourite contacts. I can even set a schedule for this feature so that it'll automatically turn on and off at the scheduled time.

How to mute notifications except for calls from favourite contacts during the night?
As the example, we'll try using the Do not disturb feature to only allow notifications for incoming calls from favourite contacts between 9pm to 6am every day by using the following steps:

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
4. Tap Do not disturb.
5. If Do not disturb is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
6. Set exceptions:
• Tap Allow exceptions.
• If Allow exceptions is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
• Check the box next to Calls to set it as exception.
• Tap Calls and/or messages from and then select Favourite contacts only.
7. Set a schedule:
• Check the box next to Set schedule to enable this option.
• Tap Days and then select all days within a week and then tap Done button.
• Tap Start time and then set it to 09:00 pm or 21:00 (if you use 24-hour format) and then tap OK button.
• Tap End time and then set it to 06:00 am and then tap OK button.
8. Now, your phone will mute other notifications and only ring when you have incoming calls from your favourite contacts between 9pm and 6am every day.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable or Disable Key Tap Vibration in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

The default virtual keyboard in Samsung Galaxy S5 is equipped with some feedback features, one of which is the key tap vibration feature. When this feature is enabled, your phone will vibrate when you tap any key on the Samsung keyboard. However, if you don't like that vibration feedback, you can easily get rid the vibration by disabling the key tap vibration feature.


How to enable or disable the key tap vibration feature?
Basically, you can turn on or off the key tap vibration feature by using several methods. But, as the example, we'll try do so by using three different methods: from the sounds and notifications menu, from the language and input menu and from a screen or app where you can enter text.

Method #1: From the sounds and notifications menu

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
3. Scroll down the screen to find Other sounds, and then tap it.
4. Tap Vibrate when tapped to enable or disable this option. When the checkbox next to this option is checked means the key tap vibration feature is enabled and your phone will vibrate when a Samsung keyboard key is tapped.

Method #2: From the Language and input menu

1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the System section and then tap Language and input .
3. Tap Samsung keyboard.
4. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
5. Tap Vibration to enable or disable this option. When the checkbox next to this option is checked means the key tap vibration feature is enabled and your phone will vibrate when a Samsung keyboard key is tapped.

Method #3: From a screen or app where you can input text

1. Open an app or screen where you can enter text. For instance, you can open the stock Messaging app to compose a new text message.
2. Tap at the bottom right to create a new text message.
3. A virtual keyboard will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
4. Long tap the key in the left side of the space bar and then tap to quickly go to the Samsung keyboard settings.
5. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
6. Tap Vibration to enable or disable this option. When the checkbox next to this option is checked means the key tap vibration feature is enabled and your phone will vibrate when a Samsung keyboard key is tapped.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable or Disable Key Tap Sound in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a default virtual keyboard named Samsung keyboard. If needed, you can do some customizations to this keyboard, one of which is by enabling the key tap sound feature so that your phone will play a tap sound when you tap any key on the Samsung keyboard. But, if you don't like that key tap sound feedback, you can get rid the sound simply by disabling the key tap sound feature.
