Samsung Galaxy S5 lets you have multiple home screens so that you can place more apps or widgets on there and can access them with more quickly. You can move between home screens by swiping home screen to the left or to the right. To make it more playful, you can enable a home screen transition effect so that your phone will play the effect when you're moving between home screens.


How to change home screen transition effect?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. While you're on home screen, long press the Recent apps key or long tap on the blank space of the home screen to go to the home screen edit page.
  2. Tap Home screen settings icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Transition effect and then select from the following options:
    • None: select this option if you don't want your phone plays any effect when you're moving from one home screen to another, in other words, select this option to turn off the home screen transition effect.
    • Card stack: select this option if you want your phone plays the card stack effect when you're moving from one home screen to another.
    • 3D rotation: select this option if you want your phone plays the 3D rotation effect when you're moving from one home screen to another.
  4. Press the Home key to go back to your home screen.
  5. To see the transition effect when moving between home screens, swipe the home screen to the left or to the right.

Instead of manually enable or disable Wi-Fi connection in your phone, you can set your phone to auto-connect to or auto-disconnect from Wi-Fi networks at the times you want. You can do so by setting the Wi-Fi timer so that your phone will automatically enable or disable Wi-Fi at the scheduled times.


How to set Wi-Fi timer?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Network connection section and then tap Wi-Fi .
  3. If Wi-Fi is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Advanced.
  5. Tap Wi-Fi timer.
  6. Set a starting time:
    • Check the box next to Set start time.
    • Tap the Wi-Fi timer (hour and minute) to adjust the starting time when your phone has to enable Wi-Fi.
  7. Set an ending time:
    • Check the box next to Set end time.
    • Tap the Wi-Fi timer (hour and minute) to adjust the ending time when your phone has to disable Wi-Fi.
  8. Tap Done button.
  9. The Wi-Fi timer has been set and Wi-Fi in your phone will automatically turn on and off at the scheduled times. FYI, when the Wi-Fi has been turned off according to the Wi-Fi timer, you can still enable Wi-Fi manually if you wish to continue using your Wi-Fi connection to use Internet.

By default, if you have ever connected to a Wi-Fi network, either it's an open or secured network, then it'll be saved by the phone so that it'll automatically connect if the Wi-Fi network is available. But, if needed, you can set your phone to forget that saved Wi-Fi network profile, for instance when you want to clean up your list by removing Wi-Fi network profiles that are not in range, or when you encounter error while connecting to a secured Wi-Fi network and need to re-connect and re-enter the password.


How to forget a saved Wi-Fi network profile?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Network connections section and then tap Wi-Fi .
  3. If Wi-Fi is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. Tap the required Wi-Fi network profile you want to forget and then tap Forget button.
  5. The selected Wi-Fi network profile has been forgotten.

Smart network switch is a smart feature available in Samsung Galaxy S5 that can be used when Wi-Fi and mobile data connection are activated. When this feature is enabled, it can help you maintain a stable Internet connection because this feature will set your phone automatically switches to a mobile network when your current Wi-Fi network connection is weak or unstable and switches back to Wi-Fi network connection when the Wi-Fi signal becomes strong. But, you have to remember that when you use this feature via mobile network, it may increase your mobile data usage and you may incur with additional charges.


How to use smart network switch feature?
Assuming that you have enabled your mobile data connection, then you can enable the smart network switch feature by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Network connections section and then tap Wi-Fi .
  3. If Wi-Fi is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. If you have not connected yet to a Wi-Fi network, tap a Wi-Fi network profile and then tap Connect button. If the Wi-Fi network is secured network, enter the Wi-Fi network password first and then tap Connect button.
  5. Now, check the box next to Smart network switch to enable it. FYI, this option will be grayed out if your mobile data is off.
  6. Tap OK button to confirm.
  7. The smart network switch feature has been enabled and your phone will automatically switch between Wi-Fi and mobile network to maintain a stable Internet connection.

When a Wi-Fi network is not available, an alternative way that can be used to obtain internet connection is by connecting your phone to a mobile network. But, you have to remember that using mobile data connection to use internet will make you have to pay additional charges if you don't have unlimited data plan. Luckily, you can avoid big data bill and control your data usage by setting the mobile data usage limit so that your phone will automatically disable your mobile data connection when the specified limit is reached.


How to set mobile data usage limit?
You can set a limit for mobile data usage by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Network connections section and then tap Data usage .
  3. If needed, tap Mobile tab.
  4. If the mobile data is off, tap Mobile data to turn it on.
  5. Check the box next to Set mobile data limit to enable the mobile data usage limit feature.
  6. Setting the mobile data usage warning limit:
    By setting the mobile data usage warning limit, you'll be reminded when the specified mobile data usage warning limit is reached. As the example, if you have set it to 8GB then you will be reminded if you have used 8GB of data. You can set the mobile data usage warning limit by using one of the following ways:
    • Tap and hold on the right side of the graph and then drag it up or down to adjust the mobile data usage warning limit.
    • Tap the orange line within the graph to allow you manually set the mobile data usage warning limit in megabytes level and then tap Set button to apply the changes.
  7. Setting the mobile data usage limit:
    By setting the mobile data usage limit, your mobile data connection will be disabled automatically when the specified mobile data usage limit is reached. As the example, if you have set it to 10GB then your mobile data will be disabled automatically when you have used 10GB of data. You can set the mobile data usage limit by using one of the following ways:
    • Tap and hold on the right side of the graph and then drag it up or down to adjust the mobile data usage limit
    • Tap the red line within the graph to allow you manually set the data usage limit in megabytes level and then tap Set button to apply the changes.

As a note, when the specified mobile data usage limit is reached, a pop-up window will appear on the screen to tell you that the mobile data connection will be disabled as well as to let you to re-enable the mobile data if you wish to continue using mobile data connection.

When a Wi-Fi network is not available, you can alternatively obtain internet connection by connecting your phone to a mobile network. But, you have to remember that if you don't have unlimited data plan then you may incur with the additional charges when using mobile data to use internet.


How to enable mobile data?
You can enable your mobile data connection by using some methods: from the notification panel, from the quick settings panel, from the settings menu and from the home screen.


Method #1: From the notification panel
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel.
  2. Place your finger on the quick setting buttons bar and then swipe the screen from the right to the left to see the quick setting button for the Mobile data.
  3. Tap the Mobile data button to enable it. The button turns green when it's enabled.


Method #2: From the quick settings panel
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen using two fingers to open up the quick setting panel.
  2. Tap the Mobile data button to enable it. The button turns green when it's enabled.


Method #3: From the general settings menu
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Network connections section.
  3. Enabling mobile data via more networks menu:
    • Tap More networks .
    • Tap Mobile networks.
    • Check the box next to Mobile data to enable this option.
  4. Enabling mobile data via data usage menu:
    • Tap Data usage .
    • Check the box next to Mobile data to enable this option.


Method #4: From the home screen
This method can be used if you have installed a third-party mobile data widget app from the Play Store, e.g: Data Enabler Widget app. Once the app is installed, it'll be added to your widgets list so that you can add it to your home screen. Once the widget is added to home screen, you can quickly enable or disable your mobile data connection from home screen by single tapping the widget.

Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable or Disable Mobile Data From Home Screen in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

A couple weeks back, an insider named Chantal sent me an email and asked me a way to add mobile data button to her Samsung Galaxy S5 home screen. However, since Samsung Galaxy S5 doesn't have the default option or widget to let you turn on or off mobile data from home screen, then you need to install a third-party mobile data widget app from the Play Store to do so. To make it clearer, as the example, we'll use the mobile enabler widget app to let you turn on or off the mobile data from home screen.


How to turn on or off mobile data from home screen by utilizing data enabler widget?
Before doing this steps, make sure you have an empty space in your home screen. See the following steps to install the data enabler widget and then add it to home screen so that you can use it to quickly enable or disable your mobile data connection:
  1. Open Play Store app.
  2. Find the Data Enabler Widget app and then install it into your phone.
  3. Once the installation is completed, the data enabler will be added to your widgets list.
  4. Press the Home key to go to your home screen.
  5. Long press the Recent apps key or long tap in a blank area of the home screen and then tap Widgets .
  6. Find the Data Enabler 1x1 widget.
  7. Tap and hold the widget and then drag it to the home screen.
  8. Release the widget to place it on home screen.
  9. Now, you can quickly turn on or off your mobile data connection simply by single tapping the data enabler widget on home screen. The arrow icon within the widget turns white when it's enabled.
