For some reason you may want to take a picture without the camera shutter sound, for example if you want to take a picture of your baby sleep or when you want to take pictures of another people without wanting to be known by anyone. Well, you can do that by disabling your phone's camera shutter sound.

How to enable or disable the camera shutter sound?
As written on technipages.com, to do so you just need to follow the easy steps below:
- Go to Camera app through Home screen.
- Tap on Settings gear located on the upper left screen.
- Tap on Shutter sound to switch it on or off.
But, unfortunately on some carriers, you can not disable the camera shutter with the steps above, so the only way to disable this sound is to turn your phone's sound into vibrate or silent mode. From the same source, there are 3 ways to turn into silent mode:
FIRST WAY
- Pres and hold Power button.
- On the pop up menu select Silent mode.
- Now your phone will turn into silent mode.
- Go to Settings through Home screen.
- Select Sound.
- Tick the checkbox next to Silent mode option to disable all sound.
- Now your phone will turn into silent mode.
Pres Volume down button to turn the volume to be vibrate or no sound setting.
Well, once you know how to disable the camera shutter on your Galaxy SIII, now you can take picture while your baby is sleeping or when you want to take pictures of people that you like without being noticed by anyone. So, try this useful method then share your experience here through the comment below :)
Wow, I wish I had thought of turning my phone on silent.....
ReplyDeleteNone of these work. There is no disable shutter sound option in settings in an s3.
Hi There,
DeleteYes you right, on some carrier you can't find shutter sound option in settings. So, you may want to try first up to third way i mentioned above.
Hope it help :)
I with Anon, none of those work on Sprint...NONE OF THEM.
DeleteHi Amy Nelson,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Scroll down until you find a comment from LaNisha Burnett, she is also on Sprint and check my answer for her then see whether it works for you.
Hope this helps :)
I just figured a work around fir Sprint users. If you have the ability to take a picture during a video, start the video in another room (still soundsn but quieter) then walk into the room to take the pic while filming... No Sound! I just deleted the vid. Happy sleep fotos!
DeleteHi Alisa Keast,
DeleteThanks for coming and your willing to share your useful experience here. Hope this will be an alternative solution for Sprint user who wants to take a picture with no shutter sound.
Thanks again and have a nice day :)
Alisa thanks a lot! That's the only way I can make a silent photo of my sleeping baby! None of the above helped.
DeleteAnyone know how to get the shutter sound off on a Japanese carrier (DoCoMo) S3? I tried all of these but it still doesn't work. : (
DeleteHi Oki Fam,
DeleteThanks for coming.
In some countries, take picture without permission is prohibited, therefore the ability to turn off the shutter sound is turned off.
Other way, you can use third-party Camera app that has the ability to turn the shutter sound off, but you may find that the image quality won't be the same with the stock Camera app.
none of these worked
DeleteNone of these work wat do I do know
ReplyDeleteHi Amy,
DeleteThanks for reading my blog.
Have you tried the first up to third way i mentioned above? Did they can't work at all?
Nope... doesnt work at all... everything on my phone is silent except the shutter sound...
ReplyDeleteHi There,
DeleteI'm so sorry if this articles can't help you. You may want to try to use certain third-party app available on Play Store to help you disable shutter sound on your phone. Or you may want to use third-party silent camera app, but of course it will unable to replicate the quality of the native Android camera.

ReplyDeleteHi Mike,

Please someone. help me or tell me how to disable my webcam on my Samsung galaxy 3 phone? Its seriously freaking me out. I'm trying to read my e-mails like now, late at night and I see this eye on my browser. Nancy
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy,
DeleteThanks for write me a comment.
Did you mean a small “Eyeball” icon? Try to check whether the Smart Stay features is enable or not. If this option is enable, this icon will periodically appear to check whether you still looking up your phone or not. If yes, the screen will keep its brightness. While if not, the screen will dim. To disable this feature go to Settings-> Display -> Tap Smart Stay to disable it (when the checkbox next to this option is unchecked means this option is disabled).
Hope it helps :)
None of these ways work because a. It doesn't appear in the camera settings and b. By turning off all sound it still doesn't turn that sound off
ReplyDeleteHi Georgia Smith,
DeleteThanks for leave your comment here.
Unfortunately on some carrier and region you may unable to turn off camera shutter sound due to privacy reason. But, if this important for you, you may want to try third-party camera app available on Play Store that will allow you to turn off this sound, such as Silent Camera apps. Here's the link:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=soft.kinoko.SilentCamera
But, the quality of these applications of course will not be the same as the native camera application quality.
Hope it helps :)
The first way works to me .thank's Rehan.
ReplyDeleteHi sagar Akbar,
DeleteI'm glad to find this articles works for you.
May I know what carrier are you using now?
Given almost all S3 user who leave their comment here said that they were unable to turn off the sound using all the steps I've mentioned above.
However, thanks for coming here :)
No need to change the system, Google API allows to capture video without shutter sound.
ReplyDeleteQuietCamera - simple application that is able to record video. No shutter sound when Start\Stop recording. Capturing is not finished when the application goes to background. The recording does not stop when working in other applications. It is OK to put device to sleep or lock mode, the recording does not stop even when the screen is off. Device GPU is used for video encoding, so it is very battery friendly.
The application is based on latest API from Google, so no support of older devices is possible.
Very simple interface - only one button to start\stop recording. Best resolution is selected automatically basing on device camera preferred settings

Hi Anti Pu,
DeleteThanks for coming here and share with us a useful information and link. I really appreciate it. Sometimes we need to use third-party application to fulfill our need which is can't be filled out with the stock apps.
Thanks again.
May God always bless you :)
agree, thanks to Google, that improves API and lets to use very cool things:)
Deleteyes it works on my s3..just put mute the sound..anyway thx :)
ReplyDeleteHi DidYouMissZert,
DeleteThanks for coming and share your experience here.
Btw, would you mind to tell me what carrier are you using now? Due to almost all the reader who leave their comment here were unable to turn off their camera shutter sound using all the steps I've mentioned above.
People are simply... *expletive*. I would LOVE to see these supposed phones that, when the phone is on vibrate or mute, it still makes a shutter sound. People really grate on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteMy S3 with Verizon in VA, USA, does not have the shutter sound option under camera settings. But when I mute the phone or put on vibrate, there is no shutter sound as Rehab explains.
Hi Robert Moody,
DeleteThanks for coming and your willing to share your experience here. I really appreciate it. Most of them who leave their comments here said that they were unable to turn off shutter sound, even after they've done all the steps above. So, I'm more than happy to know that one of the steps above is works for you.
Thanks again.
Have a nice day :)
You're welcome to come look at mine, Robert. The shutter sound does not turn off no matter what I do. My S3 is through Sprint.
DeleteHi Christie Martin,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Please take a look at my reply on LaNisha Burnett's comment right under your comment. She also on Sprint. Hope the reply will works for you :)
The shutter cannot be turned off for SPRINT s3 phones... there is absolutly no option to turn it off and even having the phone on silent, it still makes a sound.
DeleteHi Theresa Aberham,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Yes you're right. By default, there's no option to turn off shutter sound on Sprint version due to privacy reason. AFAIK, the other ways that you can do is by using another third-party camera apps or try to get toggle shutter sound as I've mentioned on the LaNisha Burnett's comment.
Hey im on Sprint and my shutter sound plays no matter what. there is no option under the camera settings and muting all sound doesnt work either. just wanted to put that out there for my network.
ReplyDeleteHi LaNisha Burnett,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Yes, you right there is no shutter sound option under settings on Sprint version due to privacy reason. So, the possible way that you can do is use the third-party camera app, such as
- Silent camera:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=soft.kinoko.SilentCamera
- Quiet camera: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antipu.camera&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hbnRpcHUuY2FtZXJhIl0.
But, of course the quality of these applications will not be the same as the native camera application quality.
If you wants to stay using the stock one, here I found a useful link for you which will explain how to get toggle shutter sound for Galaxy S3 Sprint version with no root. Here's the link: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/253395-4-1-2-gs3-sprint-4.html#post2649963
Hope it helps :)
Put your phone on mute, then take your pics. It works. Thanks Rehan. You make the world a better place. ..(metropcs gs3)
ReplyDeleteHi Paul Arnold,
DeleteThanks for coming and share your experience here.
I'm so glad to know that you were managed to turn off shutter sound on your phone using one of the steps I've mentioned above :)
For the Sprint phones there are a few options that require a rooted phone. Search on the XDA forum. One way is to install a custom ROM that has the silent phone hack. Another is to edit the sound settings using Root Explorer or any of the file manager tools on Play which will enable the Shutter Sound on/off toggle that is mentioned in Rehan's original post. You do this by navigating to /system/csc/feature.xml and setting the "false" to "true" then reboot
ReplyDeleteHi JumboSlice,
DeleteThanks for coming here.
Also I really appreciate your willing to share your useful knowledge here. I've found an alternative solution to get toggle shutter sound for Sprint in Androidcentral forum and in XDA forum. But, unfortunately I can't explain it well to them here, so I provide them a link to there so they can read it themselves and knows the risks.
However, thanks again :)
I downloaded SILENT CAMERA and it works very well
ReplyDeleteHi Dee Dee25,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Can you please tell me what carrier are you using now? In addition the ability to turn off the shutter sound, does the result of this app as good as the result if you're using the native camera apps on your phone?
PEOPLE WITH SPRINT!!!"Sprint has had a policy in place for the last couple of years as part of our device camera specification that requires our OEM partners to ensure that the shutter sound in the camera cannot be muted by the end user. This policy is in place for privacy reasons so that using the native camera creates a sound that would be noticeable to any subjects of a photograph, willing or unwilling. This policy is another example of Sprint™s ongoing commitment to privacy when it comes to mobile device usage. This specification does not have any bearing on 3rd party camera applications that a user may download and use outside of the native device camera."
ReplyDeleteHi Emily Rogers,
DeleteThanks for coming and to tell us this useful information :)
S3 and S4 4G LTE versions with telstra (Australia) firmware do note mute camera when silent or vibrate is selected. Jellybean 4.1.1 and ICS did. 4.1.2 and above no longer do.
ReplyDeleteDifferent carriers use slightly different firmware. Don't rubbish ppls comments.
I am a hardware and software engineer so I understand how this works. Great if it works. Most unfortunately don't. The camera sound issue is also present in Note series devices on 4.1.2 or above.
Hi Brendan White,
DeleteThanks for coming and share your thought here.
Surely it will provide us a useful information, especially for the S3 users with Telstra.
For those who can't mute the camera at all even when all volume is muted, try Camera ICS, from Play Store. You can switch the sound off in the app, and you've got other options such as image size and tap to focus.
ReplyDeleteHi Phillip Chiem,
DeleteThanks for coming.
Also thanks to provide us a useful link.
I just walked through the Play Store and read the app's description, one of the point said that this app may not works on some devices. This made me so wondering whether this app is works or not in Sprint version, as we can see almost the Sprint's user who leave their comment here said they were unabled to turn off the sound, whatever they have tried. Will anybody here with sprint try this app and tell us the result?
Recently I had to get a replacement S3 due to mechanical malfunctions. While activating my new phone it said I had an update available after the update I tried your suggestion of muting the sound and it worked for my shutter sound also incredible. Nothing worked for my other S3 and also I didn't try this before the update with my replacement S3 only after the software update. This is a sprint phone by the way.
ReplyDeleteHi Mrbuck,
DeleteThanks for coming and share your thought here.
It's so surprising that your Sprint S3 able to turn off the shutter sound by muting the sound. As we all know that most of Sprint user said that they were unable to turn off shutter sound using all of the steps mentioned above. So, can you please tell me what the update version of your Sprint?
Thanks Rehan. it realy worked for me. my phone has no option for the shutter sound to be put off so i had to put it on silent and it worked.
ReplyDeleteHi Roberta Oforiwah,
DeleteThanks for coming and let me know that one of these steps has worked on your phone. If you don't mind, can you please tell me what your model number?
None of those options for the straight talk s3... it wakes my baby up when i take pictures. I hate the shutter sound... please help me.
ReplyDeleteHi Reila Sato,
DeleteThanks for coming.
In some countries, take a picture without permission is prohibited that's why the shutter sound can't be disabled. If you don't mind, you can use other third-party camera app that has an ability to turn off the shutter sound, but you may find that the image quality won't be the same as when you use the stock camera app.
