Samsung Galaxy S3 : How to Use Notification Bar

One of the important part of the Samsung Galaxy SIII which will be able to tell you everything happens in your phone is the notification bar. From here you can see the recent notification messages, status bar, alerts, etc. Through the notification bar you can also activate some device function quickly, such as Bluetooth, Sync, Mobile Data, etc.


How to use notification bar?
Below are the steps to do so:
  1. On the Home screen, tap and hold notification bar to see the pull down, then drag it downwards to display notification panel.
  2. Here you'll see a group of toggle button represent some device function, such as Wi-Fi, Silent mode, Bluetooth, etc. You can access additional device functions by sliding the screen to the right or to the left. To activate or deactivate them, simply by toggling them on or off. When the toggle button shows green means the function is turned on, while if it shows gray means the function is turned off.
  3. To open the recent notification, tap the notification messages. This will also be able to clear the notification individually.
  4. Tap Clear button to clear all the notification messages and close the panel.

Well, this is the way to use the notification bar in the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Dial and Save a Recent Call or Number

You can view the call histories on the Samsung Galaxy SIII through the call log menu in the Phone app. Here you can see a list of incoming calls, outgoing calls and missed calls. You can either redial, save the phone numbers or may remove some or all of the existing call logs.

How to dial a recent call or number?
To do so, kindly follow the steps listed below:
  1. Open Phone app.
  2. Tap the Logs tab.
  3. Here you can see a list of recent calls.
  4. Tap the desired contact or phone numbers you wish to dial.
  5. Tap the Call icon to make a call.

How to save a recent call or number?
You can either add the recent number as a new contact or add it to an exiting contact by following the steps listed below:
  1. Open Phone app.
  2. Tap the Logs tab.
  3. Here you can see a list of recent calls.
  4. Tap the desired contacts you wish to save.
  5. Here you will see two options available, they are:
    • Create contact: tap this option to create new contacts for the recent number.
    • Update existing: tap this option to add the recent number to an existing contact.
  6. Tap the required option you wish to use.
  7. Tap the Done button to save the changes.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Make an Emergency Call Without or With SIM Card

How to make an emergency call without a SIM card?
When your phone has no SIM card installed, then you'll not be able to use another normal phone services. But, you can still be able to make an emergency call as listed in the steps below:
  1. Tap Emergency call icon displaying on the screen.
  2. Enter emergency numbers, for instance 9-1-1.
  3. Tap the Call icon.
  4. While you're on call, you can utilize some options available, such as turn on or off the speaker, keypad and end call.
  5. Tap the End Call icon to end the call.

How to make an emergency call with a SIM card?
Here's how to do so when the SIM card is installed on the phone:
  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Enter the emergency number, for instance 9-1-1.
  3. Tap the Call icon.
  4. While you're on call, you can utilize some options available, such as turn on or off the speaker, keypad and end call.
  5. Tap the End Call icon to end the call.
  6. In the notification area you'll see the Emergency call icon appears. 
  7. At the Emergency Callback screen:
    • Tap to callback the emergency number with a single tap.
    • Tap and slide  to the right to exit from the emergency call mode. Once you do this step, the Emergency call icon will disappears from the notifications bar.
    • Tap and slide  to the left to return to the Home screen. This will allow you to access another apps while you're on the emergency call mode.

For the record, while you're on the emergency calling mode there is an advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is while in this mode you can redialing the emergency number with a single tap and the disadvantage is while in this mode the battery will run out more quickly compared while you're on the normal calling mode.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Change Recording Mode

Samsung Galaxy SIII has come with the advanced camera that equipped with some features and capabilities which will allow you to take a better picture. Aside from using the camera to take a picture, you can also use it to record video in HD.

Next, you can save the video files or send it to another you wish to share with through the Messaging app or Email app. For the record, the Messaging app or Email app has a limitation on how large the size of the video file allowed to attach by the app. Luckily, there is an option to limit the video size for SMS or email.


How to limit video recording size?
To do so, kindly follow the steps listed below:
  1. Open Camera app.
  2. If necessary, switch the camera icon to the video recorder icon.
  3. Tap the Settings icon.
  4. On pop up menu select Recording mode.
  5. Here you'll see three option available, they are:
    • Normal: this mode will limit the video by available space on the default storage.
    • Limit for MMS: this mode will limit the video by MMS size restrictions.
    • Limit for email: this mode will limit the video by email size restrictions.
  6. Now, you're ready to record the video.

By knowing how to change the recording mode, now you can set it according to your need. For instance, if you record the video and want to send it through the message, then you can set the recording mode to Limit for MMS. So, hope this helps :)

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Set or Clear Mark as Default on the Certain Contacts

One of the insiders named Sara was asked me how to assign non-default numbers to the speed dialing on her Samsung Galaxy SIII. First of all, you might be wondering why the numbers need to set as default? Well, it'll be useful if you have several phone numbers in a single contact and you want to send a message using easy text features, then the messaging app will automatically use the default number as the recipient.

Back to the Sara's case, if the certain phone number in contacts was marked as default, then you can only assign the default number to the speed dialing. So, in order to make you be able to assign another numbers in a contact to speed dialing, then first you need to clear the default number.

How to mark contact as default?
For those of you who don't know the steps, then here I show you how to do so:
  1. Open Contacts app.
  2. Tap the desired contact name you wish to mark one of the numbers as default.
  3. Tap the Menu key then select Mark as default.
  4. Now, you'll see the mark as default screen display radio button next to all the phone numbers in the contacts. When the radio button shows green means the phone numbers is set as default.
  5. To change the default number, tap the radio button next to another phone numbers you wish to set as default. The radio button will turn green.
  6. Tap Done button to save the changes.

How to clear mark as default?
For certain reason you might want to remove mark as default in certain contacts, as with Sara who want to set all phone numbers linked in a single contact to speed dialing. To do so, the mark as default should be cleared to enable you assign all of them to speed dialing. Well, here are the steps:
  1. Open contacts app.
  2. Tap the required contact name you wish to clear it default.
  3. Long tap in the phone number marked as default.
  4. On pop up menu select Clear default.
  5. Now the mark as default has been removed.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Fix No Microphone Button on Keyboard

Because the Samsung Galaxy SIII is not equipped with a physical keyboard, that's why Samsung has included a virtual keyboard inside it that will help your writing activities, such as when you compose a text message or email. By default, this phone use the QWERTY keyboard as you can see in your PC or laptop's keyboard. This keyboard allows you to enter letters, numbers, characters and symbols .

  2. Tap in the Enter text field to display the keyboard.

  4. Without releasing your finger, swipe your finger to the Mic icon.
  5. Now, you have a mic icon on your keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to View Shared Contents with Nearby Devices

Samsung Galaxy SIII is a DLNA capable devices which will allow you to share media file with another DLNA capable devices which are connected in the same Wi-Fi network. You need to enable file sharing option first to allow another devices accessing your data.

Aside from as a host, you can also act your phone to access data from another DLNA capable devices which are already share their media file.


How to view shared media files with nearby devices?
Here are the steps you need to do:
  1. Go to Apps through the Home screen.
  2. Tap Gallery.
  3. Here you'll see the connected devices will be listed. Tap the desired device name to browse the shared contents.
  4. If you don't see the connected device, then refresh the devices list by tapping the Menu key then select Scan for nearby devices. Once the connected devices is listed, tap it to browse the contents.

Samsung Galaxy S3 : How to Fix No Notifications Tone when Receiving Incoming Message or Email

One of the insider (how I call the inside-galaxy's visitors) named Mr. Walsh was wrote an email to me and asked why his Samsung Galaxy SIII not play a tone when receiving an incoming message or email, eventhough he had set the message tone and email tone on his phone. Well, if you're also experiencing the same problem with him, then there are a few things that you should check on your phone to solve this problem. Here they are:
  1. Make sure your phone is not in the silent mode, check this by going to Settings> Sound> Ensure the Silent mode is turned off.
  2. Make sure you have ticked the Notification option under Messaging app settings.
  3. Make sure you have ticked the Email Notification option under your Email account settings.
  4. Make sure you have adjusted the volume so you can hear the tone of an incoming message or email, check this by going to Settings> Sound> Volume> adjust the Notifications volume bar to the right to increase of the volume.
  5. Check whether you have enabled blocking mode on your phone, check this by going to Settings> Blocking Mode> (if blocking mode is enabled) then make sure the Disable notifications option is not checked .

  6. If your Samsung Galaxy SIII running with the Android Jelly Bean, make sure you have checked Show Notifications in Messaging app and Email app. Do this thing by going to Settings> Application Manager> Go to the app (Messaging and email)> tick the box next to Show Notifications.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Share Media Files with Nearby Devices

There are some option in Samsung Galaxy SIII to share files over Wi-Fi, such as Group Cast which will allow you to share document or file with another AllShare Play capable device that connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Another option available in this phone which also utilizing Wi-Fi network is the nearby devices. This option will allow you to share media files with another DLNA --Digital Living Network Alliance-- capable device which are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.


How to share video, photos or music with nearby devices?
To do so, kindly follow the steps as listed below:
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap More settings.
  3. Tap Nearby devices.
  4. Tick the box next to File sharing option to turn on or off the option.
  5. If this is the first time you use this option, then you'll see some information about this option, tap OK to continue. Tap Do not show again to stop the message from appearing again.
  6. Tap Shared contents to determine which the media files you would like to share: Video, Photos or Music. Tap the box next to the desired option, then tap OK button.
  7. You'll receive a request from nearby devices to access your phone, tap OK to accept and add the device to the Allowed device list, or tap Cancel to reject and add the device to the Not-allowed devices list.
  8. Tap Device name to change your phone's names, then tap Save. The name will be used by the others to identify your phone.

Once you activate the file sharing, another allowed DLNA capable devices in the same Wi-Fi network will be able to access data on your phone. So, hope this helps :)

Samsung Galaxy S3 : How to Fix the "None" Button Grayed Out When Turn Off the Screen Lock

Some visitors of the inside-galaxy who visit the article about turning the screen lock off have left their comments there. Some of them said that they could not turn off the screen lock because the "None" button is disabled or grayed out.

If you're also experiencing the same problem, the None button grayed out, then in this article I will summarize some steps that you can take to resolve this issue. But whatever the case, it would be much more easier if you first do your own investigate and know roughly what the causes, so you will be easier to find the solution, because there is no one who know the device better than you. Well, here they are:
  1. Clear credential in your phone by going to Settings> Security> Clear credentials. If it not works, then go to the next steps .
  2. Check whether you have installed an application that requires you to activate the screen lock on your phone, for example FoxFi app. If so, remove the application if you're no longer use them. If you still want to keep the application, then you might want to use the pattern methods for simplicity.
  3. Check whether there are settings in the phone that requires you to activate the screen lock. The one that I know is when you turn on the option to encrypt the SD card then the None button will be disabled and you're only allowed to use a pattern, PIN or password to unlock the screen. If this is the causes, disable the option to re-enable the None button. If not, you might want to use the pattern methods for simplicity.
  4. Check whether you have a VPN on your phone. If so , then you need to remove the VPN to re-enable the None button. But if you really need a VPN, then you might want to use the pattern methods for simplicity.

These points mentioned above are some general things that you can do to resolve this problem. This may be works on some users, and may be not for others. However, if you have another tip or trick to resolve this issue and it's not listed here, then you can share them through the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Change Default Storage on Voice Recorder App

A good thing in the Samsung Galaxy SIII is that you can add a memory card into this phone to extend the storage and prevents the internal storage quickly run out. As we all know that the low internal storage can give you some problems, such as error when open or save files, etc. . Fortunately, once you add a memory card to your phone, you can set the default storage in some applications to the SD card, for instance you can set any image taken by the camera to automatically saved to the SD card .

In addition to the camera app, you can also set the default storage in another app, one of which is a voice recorder app. You can choose to save the voice recorder files to the phone or memory card.


How to change the default storage on voice recorder app ?

  1. Go to Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to Voice recorder, then tap it.
  3. Tap the Menu key then select Settings.
  4. Tap Storage , then you can choose to use either Phone or Memory card as the default storage.

Once you set the default storage in voice recorder app, now every time you use this application to record sound, the file will be automatically saved in the SD card.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to Adjust Sound Volume

Set the ringtone is the best way to tell you who the person is calling you. Moreover, in Samsung Galaxy SIII you can also assign different ringtone on each contact you have saved on your phonebook.

  3. Tap Volume.
  4. Now you'll see some option available here, such as music, video, games and other media, ringtone, notification, etc, with the slider next to each of the option
  5. Slide the slider on each option to the right to increase the volume or slide it to the left to decrease the volume.
  6. Tap OK button to save the changes.

Well, this is the step to change ringtone and other notification volume on your phone. Also by knowing this step, now you can set the sound volume according to your need. So, hope this helps :)

Samsung Galaxy S3 : How to Solve Can't Control Music Player on Lock Screen

A visitor of the inside-galaxy asked me through her comment that she could not control the stock music player app --such as skip, pause/play, rewind, etc-- when the phone is locked unless she's unlocked her phone. Well , if you're also experiencing the same problem with her, then better you check a few things below to solve the problem:

1. Use Swipe method to unlock the screen
With the basic swipe methods to unlock the screen, whenever you're playing a music with the music player and the phone is locked, then you can control the music player with a music player control which can be found by sliding down the notification bar. Whereas, for the other unlock methods, such as a PIN, password or pattern, you need to unlock the screen first to be able to control the music player.

2. Use the native headphones of the Samsung Galaxy S3
If you use the headphones that come along with your phone, then you can utilize it to control the music player by using its physical buttons, such as you can jump to the next song by double clicking the small pause button beside the volume control.

3. Use the third-party music player app with lockscreen controls
If you don't want to use the swipe method to unlock --for the security reasons maybe-- and or you don't want to use headphones, then the options that you can possibly do is by installing a third-party music player apps that have lock screen controls, such as Poweramp, doubleTwist, etc. You can get them all through the Play Store.

There are several option that we can find under accessibility menu in Samsung Galaxy SIII. One of which is an option called Talkback.   6. To sign out, tap the Profile icon in the Skype's main screen, tap the Menu key then select Sign out.

How to reinstall apps through the Play Store?
To do so kindly follow the steps listed below:
  1. Go to Apps through the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to Play Store, then tap it.
  3. Tap the Menu key then select My apps.
  4. Swipe the screen to the left to display ALL applications.
  5. Here you'll see a list of installed and previously downloaded apps.
  6. Tap the desired app you wish to reinstall.
  7. Tap the Install button to start installation.
  8. Read carefully on the app permissions, then tap ACCEPT button.
  9. Once the installation is completed, tap the OPEN button to launch the app.
  10. Now you're ready to use the app.

Messaging app is one of the stock apps available inside the Samsung Galaxy SIII which will allow you to send or receive text or multimedia messages. This app has come with some option to facilitate you while using this app, such as an option to allow you change the message tone as you wish to inform you an incoming messages.

There's also an option available that you can customize called emergency call alert. You can either enable or disable one or more of them according to your need.


How to turn on or off emergency alert settings?
Below are the steps to do so:
  1. Open Messaging app.
  2. Tap the Menu key then select Settings.
  3. Tap Emergency alert under Emergency message settings section.
  4. Here you'll see some emergency alert option available, they are:
    • Presidential alert: this option allow the phone to receive presidential alert.
    • Extreme alert: enable this option to allow the phone receive extreme alert.
    • Severe alert: enable this option to allow the phone receive severe alert.
    • Amber alert: enable this option to allow the phone receive child abduction emergency alert.
    • Emergency alert test message: enable this option to allow the phone receive test alert.
  5. Enable or disable option by tapping the option. When the box next to the option is checked means the option is enabled. For the record, the presidential alert is enable by default and can't be disabled.
  6. Done, the wireless emergency alert has been updated.
