Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Enable and Use Priority Senders in Messaging App in Android 4.4.2 Kitkat

Have you ever wasted your time just to find a conversation from particular contact because you had a lot of conversations in Messaging app? Well, though this app has the search function, but some of you may not really like using this feature and prefer to scroll up or down the screen to find a conversation. If that so, you can save yourself and your time by utilizing the priority senders feature. This feature lets you set contacts as priority contacts and display their contacts icon to open up the conversations in the priority senders list so that you can reach them with more easily and quickly, no matter how many conversations you have.

How to enable or disable the priority senders feature in Messaging app?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open Messaging app.
  2. Tap or long press the Recent apps key to open up the additional options and then select Settings.
  3. Depending on your current settings, tap Priority senders to enable or disable this option. When the checkbox next to this option is ticked means the priority senders feature is enabled and it will be displayed above the conversations list.

How to use the priority senders feature in Messaging app?
If the priority senders is enabled, then you can add contacts to the priority senders list (or delete them if needed) as well as rearrange the contacts so that you can be easier to reach their messages. See the following steps to use the priority senders feature in Messaging app:
  1. Open Messaging app.
  2. Add contacts to the priority senders list.
You can add up to 25 contacts to the priority senders list by using the following steps:
    • Tap to add contacts to the priority senders.
    • Tap Inbox to add contacts that have ever sent you messages to the priority senders or tap Contacts to add contacts from the Contacts app to the priority senders.
    • Select the required contacts and then tap Done button.
    • The selected contacts will be added to the priority senders list and they will be displayed above the conversations list.
  3. Remove contacts from the priority senders list.
If necessary, you can remove contacts from the priority senders list by using the following steps:
    • Long tap a contact in the priority senders list.
    • Tap Edit list of priority senders,
    • Tap on the required contacts you want to remove from the list.
    • Tap Done button to save the changes.
  4. Rearrange the contacts in the priority senders list.
If necessary, you can also change the contacts position in the priority senders list by using the following steps:
    • Long tap a contact in the priority senders list.
    • Tap Edit list of priority senders.
    • Tap and hold a contact and then drag it to the required position.
    • Release to place the contact in the new position.
    • Tap Done button to save the changes.

When you have added some contacts to the priority senders, you can easily and quickly reach them to send a message or read/reply/forward a message simply by tapping the contact icon in the priority senders list. Therefore, this feature will be more useful if you add your important/favourite contacts to the priority senders so that you can save your time by skipping the scroll up/down the screen section just to find the conversation.

      1. Try removing that contact from the priority sender list and then re-add the contact.
      2. Try performing clear cache for the Messaging app by using the following steps:
      - In home screen, tap "Apps".
      - Tap and hold the Messaging app and then drag it to the App info icon located at the top of the screen.
      - Tap "Clear cache" button.
      - Now, try using the priority sender.

  4. Is it possible to add a group as a single priority sender button? When I click the group I want to add, it then makes me click each individual inside that group, and subsequently creates a priority sender button for each individual instead of just one for the group... I have s5 Sprint...

    1. Hi Jay Fanara,
      Thanks for coming.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to add a group to the priority senders list since we're only allowed to add an individual contact into this list.

  5. I am using priority send feature within the email app. I am looking for a widget that would allow me to put one of my priority senders on the home screen, so I can be notified when a email comes and get to the senders emails in one touch...any ideas?

    1. Hi Hutch,
      Thanks for coming.
I don't know whether there's a widget that has that ability, but you can try searching for it in the Play Store app. However, if you wish to easily recognize when you have new email messages from priority senders, there are two ways that can be taken:
      1. You can set the different tone for incoming email messages from priority senders.
      2. You can enable the "Emails from priority senders" option within the Notification readout feature. This will let your phone reads out sender's information when you're receiving email messages from all contacts you have set as priority senders in the stock Email app. You can see the detail steps here: http://inside-galaxy.blogspot.com/2015/03/samsung-galaxy-s5-how-to-use.html

May I know your phone's model number?
FYI, the model number of my Samsung Galaxy S5 is SM-G900H.
I have priority senders option within the stock Messaging app when my phone runs with Android 4.4.2 Kitkat or Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.
