Samsung Galaxy S5: How to Use Do Not Disturb Feature in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

If you have updated your Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, you will have a new feature named Do not disturb that can be used to mute all calls and alerts, except for your selected exceptions. By enabling this feature, you can keep your phone silent so that you won't be interrupted by notification sounds and vibrations of unwanted calls and alerts while you're sleeping, during meetings, or during other situations. For flexibility reason, aside from letting you turn this feature on at anytime, this feature also has the scheduling options to let you turn this feature on and off automatically at scheduled times.

How to enable Do not disturb feature?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. On any screen, swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notifications panel and then tap at the top right to go to the settings menu.
  2. With the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap Sounds and notifications .
  3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom.
  4. Tap Do not disturb.
  5. If Do not disturb is off, tap the ON/OFF switch at the top right to turn it on. This icon will be displayed on the status bar as a sign that Do not disturb mode is enabled.

How to set up exceptions when Do not disturb feature is enabled?
You can set up exceptions so that you can still receive notification sounds and vibrations for your selections when Do not disturb mode is enabled. You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. While you're in Do not disturb menu, tap Allow exceptions.
  2. Use these options to set up exceptions when Do not disturb mode is enabled:
    • Alarms: check the box next to this option to allow notification sounds and vibrations for alarms.
    • Calls: check the box next to this option to allow notification sounds and vibrations for incoming calls.
    • Messages: check the box next to this option to allow notification sounds and vibrations for incoming messages.
    • Calls and/or messages from: this option will be available if you have set Calls and/or Messages as exceptions. You can use this option to choose whose calls and/or messages will make your phone plays notification sounds and vibrates. You can select All to allow notification sounds and vibrations for all incoming calls and messages, Favourite contacts only to allow notifications sounds and vibrations for incoming calls and messages come from favourite contacts, or Contacts only to allow notification sounds and vibrations for incoming calls and messages come from those listed in your contacts list.
    • Events and reminders: check the box next to this option to allow notification sounds and vibrations for S Planner events and personal reminders.

How to set up schedule for Do not disturb feature?
If needed, you can set a schedule so that Do not disturb mode will turn on or off automatically at scheduled times. You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. While you're in Do not disturb menu, check the box next to Set schedule.
  2. Set days:
    • Tap Days.
    • Select the required days within a week you want Do not disturb mode to turn on automatically.
    • Tap Done button to save the changes.
  3. Set time:
    • Tap Start time to adjust the time when Do not disturb mode will turn on automatically and then tap OK button to save the changes.
    • Tap End time to adjust the time when Do not disturb mode will turn off automatically and then tap OK button to save the changes.

As a note, if Do not disturb mode turns off automatically at a scheduled time, don't turn this feature on manually if you still want your schedule settings keep working, otherwise this feature won't turn off automatically at the previously scheduled time.

  1. I have a samsung galaxy s5 with the most recent operating system. I have do not disturb set up to only allow calls from favorites but when I receive a message from favorites I still receive a sound notificaton even when do not disturb is active. Is this just a glitch in the system? How can I fix this issue? Thanks!

    1. Hi Eva Compisi,
Thanks for coming and I'm sorry for so late answer.
FYI, I have tried duplicating your issue and I found a solution to fix it: make sure the stock Messaging app notification is not set as "Priority". You can check it by using the following steps:
      1. Go to the settings menu.
      2. By default, the settings menu is displayed in grid view, scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap "Sounds and notifications".
      3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap "App notifications".
      4. Scroll down the screen to find "Messages", and then tap it.
      5. Make sure "Priority" option is not enabled. If it's enabled, you can disable it by sliding the ON/OFF switch next to "Priority" to the left.
      6. Now, your phone will mute notification (sound and vibration) when you receive a message from a favourite contact when the Do not disturb mode is enabled.

      Hope it helps :)

    1. Hi Nadine Gamb,
      Thanks for coming.
FYI, if you have enabled the Do not disturb mode and set messages come from favourite contacts as exception, it will only allow notification (sound and vibration) for incoming messages come from your favourite contacts and mute notifications for incoming messages come from another contacts.
If you'd like to block text message from certain contacts, you can use the Spam filter option within the stock Messaging app settings.

    2. But it used to work this way. Now it's allowing all text and calls to come through.

    3. Hi Nadine Gamb,
I don't mean to be persistent, but Do not disturb mode won't block calls or messages. This feature only allows you to allow or mute notification(sound and vibration) for incoming calls or messages.

  4. I understand that. But it is allowing every call or text to come through. I have it blocked or silenced for certain times but it doesn't silence ANY calls anymore. EVERYTHING vibrates.

    1. Hi Nadine Gamb,
I'm so sorry if I can't help you.
But, if you don't mind, please make sure the priority settings for the notification of the stock Messaging app and the stock Phone/Contact app are turned off by using the following steps:
      1. Go to the settings menu.
      2. By default, the settings menu is displayed in grid view. Scroll down to the Sound and display section and then tap "Sound and notifications".
      3. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then tap "App notifications".
      4. Scroll down to find "Contacts", and then tap it.
      5. Turn off priority settings for the stock Phone/Contacts app by sliding the ON/OFF switch next to "Priority" to the left.
      6. Press the Back key to return to the previous screen.
      7. Now, scroll down the screen to find "Messages", and then tap it.
      8. Turn off priority settings for the stock Messaging app by sliding the ON/OFF switch next to "Priority" to the left.

  5. Hi, If you use Do Not Disturb but you were waiting on a text from a contact that was not a favorite, what will happen? Would the message be considered as Spam and be sent their? Would the person sending the message get a notification stating I can not be reached? I'm just trying to figure out what should I do for the future if it comes on automatically before I am able to turn it off.

    1. Hi Kierra,
Thanks for coming and I'm sorry for so late answer.
Let's say that you have enabled Do not disturb mode and set Messages from favourite contacts only as the exceptions. When a message from a contact that is not a favourite arrives, your phone will still receive the message but it won't vibrate nor play a notification sound.

If you want to set text messages from a specific contact as spam, you can register the contact as spam in the stock Messaging app settings. This will automatically redirect the messages from that contact to the "Spam messages" folder.

    2. When a non priority notification or call comes through in do not disturb mode, the screen turns on. Not good if trying to sleep! Is there a way to keep the screen off? I'm using stock Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 in UK with all OTA updates applied.

    1. Hi Me.Like.Travelling,
      Thanks for coming.
Add those you want to allow to come through when on do not disturb mode to your favourite contacts list and then select "Favourite contacts only" as your "calls and/or messages from" exception.

  11. Hi, I am having an issue with this feature. I have it set to turn on At 10pm and off at 7am. I have it set to allow exceptions of favourites as I am on call and only want that person getting through. But I am getting nothing through. What am I doing wrong. The messages and calls from favourite is selected and the person is set as favourite

  12. I always use my Do Not Disturb option at night and the only exceptions I have is the alarm and phone calls to come through. Text messages should be muted but its not. This feature worked fine up until last week. Do you know why text messages are not all of a sudden muted? The software is 5.1.1. Please let me know if you can assist in this issue.

    1. Sadly to say that there's no option for us to create multiple schedules when using do not disturb mode.

  14. "Do Not Disturb" is NOT (I repeat NOT!) the same as "Blocking mode"... I know this from testing my phone. Blocking mode does exactly that. Nothing gets thru except your contacts and fav's. The Do Not Disturb lets anyone and I mean anyone etc come thru but no sounds only the BRIGHT light of an incoming call... It's a shame they Samsung don't know what Do Not Disturb means in America . But does let the contacts and fav's make sounds etc with the normal bright light.
